In the Martial Arts there is Do and there is Jutsu. Jutsu is the technique and Do is the way. Do refers to 'Budo' which is the way of Japanese Martial Arts.
Jutsu
In the English language 'Jutsu' are best described as 'the skill of technique'. I say 'technique' because Jutsu can be a series of techniques (like Waza) or just a single technique.
Some good examples of the word 'Jutsu' in use are 'Tai Jutsu' meaning 'Unarmed-Style' and 'Ken-Jutsu' meaning 'Sword-Style'.
As Aikido-Ka we should focus on applying 'Ki-Jutsu' ~ a form of mediation ~ to everything we do in our lives. - We are truly living the Aikido when we are living consciously.
What is Waza?
Waza is the form of technique. Examples of Waza include 'Kihon-Waza' which means Basic-techniques, Nage-Waza which means Throwing-Techniques, and 'Suwari-Waza' which are seated techniques.
Series of techniques are also called 'Tori'. Sometimes, but not always Waza and Tori are used in the same way, but when not the difference is obvious.
Do
Do is the way. The word 'Do' is sometimes added at the end of martial art names. Examples of this are Karate-Do meaning 'empty-handed way' and Ju-Do meaning 'Gentle-Way'.
We follow the Ai-Ki-Do which is the Joining-Spirit-Way. We develop our martial arts by joining spirit and remaining conscious of the oneness.
Aikido was founded by a brilliant man named Morihei Ueshiba. Practitioners of Aikido often refer to him as O Sensei (meaning 'great teacher'). O Sensei spent his life learning many Japanese Martial Arts, philosophies and spirituality.
The Aikido did in fact exist in many forms before O Seisei, but it was O Sensei who coined the term Aikido and developed the complete system for students study it.
The Aikido that is practised the way O Sensei taught and intended it uses the Martial Arts techniques and applications of the Daito Ryu of Aiki-Jujutsu and the spiritual philosophies of Shinto and Oomoto.
Ai means blending. Ki means spirit, and Do is the Martial Way. The AI KI DO is either not a Martial Art or it is the very essence of Martial Art, Martial Arts are in fact only a part of the Aikido. The Aikido is a way of life.
When the Aikido is used in a fight, the attacker, the defender, and the techniques that both of the opponents use are all at one.
Though it is a variation of Aiki-Jujutsu that is in almost all cases taught as the martial system in the Aikido, students are not bound to it. Outside the Dojo students may apply the Aikido to other Martial Arts they know. The Aikido is very flexible.
In the Aikido there is really no such thing as violence. A fight becomes no longer a fight ~ it is transformed.
The Aikido goes beyond Martial Arts. It can be applied to every aspect of one's life. It just depends on how far the individual takes it.
I (Fujiwara Kaito) will go into detail about the AI KI DO. I will explain the philosophy and spirituality of Aikido, but I will also explain how anyone can take any martial skill they know and make it Ai Ki.
The system I speak of is called 'The Heaven's Wind Style'. In this style most of O Sensei's Daito Ryu techniques are preserved but there is also much more to develop.
The Heaven's Wind style is a martial system complete with strikes, blocks, kicks, grappling, throws, and weapon's namely Ken-Jutsu(Sword Arts) and Shuriken Jutsu (Knife Throwing). We work to apply the AIKIDO to all of the above.
